BASF's industrial site runs continuous, energy-intensive production, where an unplanned MV outage stops production lines directly.
The challenge
As the site's power demand grew, its internal grid team faced a familiar choice: fund new cable infrastructure to serve additional load, or find a way to safely use more of the capacity already in the ground.
Our contribution
Real-time thermal rating went on the highest-utilisation MV feeders, replacing static worst-case ratings with dynamic ratings based on actual cable and ambient conditions, combined with integrated risk monitoring so additional load was only ever carried within limits validated by live data rather than by assumption.

Real-time rating revealed 18% additional usable capacity against the static ratings — capacity BASF used to add new loads without laying new cable runs.
The site now treats real-time capacity as a standard input when evaluating new load requests, rather than defaulting to a new-infrastructure project as the first option.
